Local Farms and Brewers
As many of our regular visitors know, the 1846 Tavern offers many items on its menu that are made with fresh, locally grown ingredients. One of the many benefits of being located in Southern Vermont is being surrounded by many family run small and medium sized farms located in Western New York, Northeastern Massachusetts, Western New Hampshire, and Vermont. These farms humanely grow, raise, and harvest sustainable and exceptionally tasty meats, cheeses, and vegetables.
So, in recent weeks and months we have made more of an effort to locate, visit, sample, and include on our menu the products of local farms. At least once a week, Phil and Kathy travel to local vendors to purchase ingredients that Chef Milton will use tonight to prepare and serve your meal. At the very least, we believe that these local farms and producers deserve some recognition so we have included a list here that will undoubtedly continue to grow.
The same is true with our raw bar and craft beer menus. Over the last couple of years, based on selection and freshness alone, our raw bar menu has become second to none in a 100 mile radius of the 1846 Tavern. This has come about by hard work and developing a reputation behind the scenes with local oyster farmers. Donny is on a direct line, first name basis with many new and established oysters farms throughout the New England coastal states. They also deserve recognition and we have listed some of them here.
Last but not least, Vermont is a leading producer in comparison with the whole United States of excellent and diverse craft beers. It’s almost an embarrassment of riches. Every week, we take advantage of and offer for your pleasure, a wide selection of freshly made Vermont craft beers. Combined with high demand and sometimes very rare brews from other New England states, our craft beer selection, in draft and in cans, is always ahead of the pale (pun intended). This advantage has also come about by visiting local brewers, rubbing elbows with the brewers, and sampling their products. It is only fitting that we recognize here some of these family run and employee owned breweries.
